The new European REACH regulation concerning registration, evaluation and authorization of chemical substances and intermediates establishes a single European register that will control chemical substances produced or imported in quantities exceeding one ton per year.
Torraspapel must register certain intermediary products used in the manufacturing of bleached kraft pulp at its Zaragoza factory. Other chemical products used in the manufacturing of uncoated, coated, and specialty papers do not need to be registered by Torraspapel but by the supplier. Therefore, Torraspapel has requested that all of its suppliers provide written confirmation that they fulfill the obligations established by REACH regulation.
Torraspapel pre-registered the intermediary products included in the regulation with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) in August 2008, thus is currently in the process of complying with the obligations derived from REACH regulation.
In addition, Torraspapel does not use any of the substances that figure in the SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern) list, which appears in Annex XV of the REACH regulation, and has requested confirmation from all its chemical suppliers that they do not use substances from said list in the products they supply. In the event that the SVHC list expands, Torraspapel will continue its strict compliance with the regulation.
