Torraspapel's Algeciras Mill Obtains European EMAS Environmental Certification

 11/1/2007

Torraspapel will certify all its mills under the EMAS management and audit system in 2008.

The EU's environmental management and audit system known internationally as EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) is a voluntary initiative designed to promote continuous improvement of the environmental performance of public and private organisations by means of:

  • Establishing an environmental management system
  • Systematic, periodical and objective evaluation of this system
  • Informing the public and the interested parties
  • Training and active involvement of workers

The system, based on the ISO 14001 environmental management standard, also requires the production of a public environmental statement verified by an external auditor. EMAS represents modern environmental management, corporate transparency and environmental participation.

One of the commitments acquired by Torraspapel, part of the Lecta Group, in its 2006 Environmental Report is that of obtaining EMAS certification for 100% of its production by 2008. The Algeciras mill is the first of the Company's mills to achieve this certification, and it will be followed shortly by the other production centres. In addition, all of Torraspapel's factories hold ISO 9001 quality certification and ISO 14001 environmental certification..
