II Torraspapel Volunteer Day Torraspapel volunteers collaborate with the NGO Acciónatura (previously Fundació Natura) in the restoration of the habitat of the Sils lagoon in Northeast Spain.
The volunteer activity sponsored by Torraspapel, part of the Lecta Group, forms part of the company's social commitment with a focus on environmental and humanitarian actions proposed by the company in which employees participate by offering their time and effort to make a positive contribution to the community.
PROJECT: Restoration of the habitat of the Sils lagoon With the collaboration of the Spanish NGO Acciónatura as in previous years, Torraspapel carried out a new environmental action with the participation of a motivated group of 39 employees and their relatives. Their goal was to aid in the restoration of the habitat of the Sils Lagoon (Girona, Spain).
The Sils Lagoon restoration is one of Acciónatura's most important and emblematic projects.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE AREA The Sils Lagoon is one of the most important wetlands of north-eastern Spain and is part of the European network of protected natural spaces. Wetlands constitute some of the most endangered ecosystems and extremely valuable to migratory birds. Over the past seven years, considerable human and economic resources have been devoted to improving the lagoon: restoring natural habitats, promoting local fauna and acquiring terrain for restoration.
ACTIONS A variety of species were planted and watered, after which protective tubing was installed to mark the presence of each new plantation.
In total, 45 trees were planted, amongst them ash, white willow and alder, and over 80 riverside bushes such as black willow, blackthorn and dogwood, with the aim of recovering the riverside vegetation and restoring the natural habitats in the interest of conserving nature and so that it may be preserved for public use.
AIMS AND BENEFITS: The Volunteer Day not only brings social and environmental benefits to a community in which Torraspapel has part of its facilities but also reinforces the company's corporate values in the eyes of its employees and management, while strengthening their sense of belonging to the company. In addition to the direct benefits for the area, this type of activity is gratifying for those who participate. For the employee, a chance to come with his/her family to spend a day in contact with nature, participating in the conservation of an area of great ecological interest, can be a very enriching experience. With activities of this kind, the participants have had the opportunity to do something different and to share in the fulfilment of an social and environmental good.
RESULTS In the coming months, Acciónatura will continue to work in the area, carrying out diverse activities to track, monitor and maintain the plantations.
