GOALS_____________________________
Torraspapel has signed an agreement with Unicef to provide economic support for its development programmes, and specifically the "School in a suitcase" project. Our company, as a manufacturer of paper, a vehicle of transmission of culture and knowledge, aims to collaborate in projects addressed to literacy training and education for children throughout the world.
TARGET AUDIENCE___________________
One of the social groups most severely hit in countries that suffer wars or natural disasters is the children: a group which at the same time constitutes that same country's greatest hope of recovery in the medium and long term. For this reason, one of the many projects of Unicef, the United Nations Children's Fund, is to work to restore normal schooling in such countries as soon as possible.
THE PROJECT________________________
In this line of work, Unicef has set up a project called "School in a suitcase", an action which aims to restore educational activity by sending 'suitcases' or kits with the basic material needed by a class of 40 pupils to begin learning again. Each case contains:
1 double-sided blackboard |
10 sticks of white chalk |
40 notebooks |
10 pairs of scissors |
25 notepads of white paper |
40 slates |
1 geometry set |
40 crayons |
30 sets of modeling clay |
10 emergency blankets |
The first time Unicef operated this programme was in Bosnia, and since then other countries have received these suitcases. The last country to which they have been sent is Afghanistan. Preliminary data from the Unicef personnel working there indicate that 7,562 classrooms have been damaged or destroyed, including the teaching material, furniture, textbooks, etc. The goal is to recover a certain degree of educational normality during the month of March.
